A. project
CON-FRONT is a brand new international and multidisciplinary project on the cultural commemoration of the Great War. The project is supported in the Creative Europe programme within the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018. The partnership will examine new ways of commemoration, accumulating the specific expertise of both contemporary music and heritage sectors while confronting past with present.
CON-FRONT wants to raise awareness on the common European legacy of the First World War through a unique international cooperation between music venues and heritage partners. The partnership spreads from Belgium, France, Slovenia to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, connecting a large part of the different historical continental war fronts.
The Great War was the first military conflict in human history on a global scale. Its outcome defined the landscape, economy, identity and demographics of continental Europe. Moreover the First World War uprooted millions of European civilians, creating the first massive European refugee crisis ever. War migration has repeated itself over and over during the last 100 years. A better comprehension of the past is essential to understand the present challenges Europe is facing.
CON-FRONTs most visible output is a multidisciplinary creation (60 minutes of music and visuals) of a group of young international artists (pop and rock musicians and visual artists), completed by a European tour and a cross-border documentary capturing the whole process. The contemporary music and visual creation will be guided by a director and produced in five international and historically nurtured residencies in the participating venues.
CON-FRONT will engage a max. of two Belgian artists to participate in both the creation and the tour: one contemporary musician (pop/rock/jazz/world/etc.) and one visual artist. Please find all details on the calls here.
The CON-FRONT partners are Le Grand Mix (Tourcoing – FR), 4AD (Diksmuide – BE), Walk of Peace Foundation (Kobarid – SI) and MKC (Skopje, MK). They are supported by a wide range of cultural and heritage partners in the four participating countries.
